This has become the No. 1 new driver behind the gold bull market

From Hard Assets Investor:

It’s that time of the quarter when we dig deep into the demand numbers for gold provided by the World Gold Council. The headline for gold bugs is generally a good one. Even with the average price of gold more than $1,700 for the quarter, demand was up 6% year-over-year, with strong demand from anything related to investment.

Looked at on percentage terms, real growth of physical investment fell 10% from this time last year due to pullback in jewelry demand.

But that’s not the interesting story here. We all know, up until this point, that investor demand for gold and the subsequent rise in prices has been fueled by the search for safe-haven assets around the globe as uncertainty about the economy in Europe, and frankly everywhere else, inspires panic.

The really interesting story is this…

Two of the world’s best-known stock-pickers have dramatically different outlooks on stocks today

From Bloomberg Businessweek:

U.S. companies are the most profitable in more than 40 years, and some of the best-known stock pickers are divided over how long that will last.

Bob Doll, chief equity strategist at BlackRock Inc., said low labor costs and cost-saving technology will allow companies to keep up their profitability. Jeremy Grantham, chief investment strategist of Boston-based Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co., said margins will send stock markets tumbling when they eventually revert to their mean.

"The implication for the stock market is ugly, because it means…

How to increase your productivity and enjoy life more

From Washington’s Blog:

Tony Schwartz notes:

Our most fundamental need as human beings is to spend and renew energy.

When I began to crash in the early afternoon after my red-eye flight, I took a 30-minute nap in the room we have set aside for that purpose in our office. The nap didn’t give me nearly enough rest to fully catch up, but it powerfully revived me for the next several hours.

At the other end of the spectrum, exercise… positively influences our cognitive functioning and our mood.

The truth is that we ought to be exercising nearly every day, ideally for at least 45 minutes, including strength training at least twice a week.

The secret to optimal well-being and effectiveness is to make more rhythmic waves in your life.To build the highest level of fitness, for example, it’s critical to challenge the heart at high intensity for short periods of time, and then to recover deeply.

The bigger the amplitude of your wave – the higher your maximum heart rate, and the more deeply you recover – the more flexibly you can respond to varying demands and the healthier you likely are.

… Paradoxically, the most effective way to operate at work is…

The four places to find the world’s best dividend stocks

From Dividend Growth Stocks:

According to ‘world-stock-exchanges.net,’ the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the the largest stock exchange in the world by dollar volume, with over 2,500 listed securities. NYSE is operated by NYSE Euronext, the holding company created by the combination of NYSE Group, Inc. and Euronext N.V.

The NYSE is closely followed by the Tokyo Stock Exchange with a total market capitalization of over $5 trillion and 2,271 domestic companies listed. Next up is the London Stock Exchange. It is the world’s oldest stock exchange, listing around 3,000 companies.

When considering all the remaining stock exchanges, I couldn’t begin to estimate how many different stocks are traded around the world. Like everything else, there are many participants, but few players.

Though the population of stocks may be large, there are only a precious few that are worthy dividend stocks. When spending my time looking for worthy investments, there are four primary places I look:

I. S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats

These stocks are the best of the best — the blue blood stocks. S&P maintains the list. Here is…

Barclays: There is "no way" oil prices can fall now

From Pragmatic Capitalism:

Here’s a fairly alarming prediction heading into the seasonally strong winter months for oil prices.

Amrita Sen, commodities analyst at Barclays, was interviewed on CNBC recently to discuss the outlook for energy prices and to shed some light as to why oil prices have diverged from many other commodities and remained so firm in the face of severe global headwinds.

Sen says the likelihood of prices falling much below current levels is close to nil:

"It’s been the supply side. Libya went off the market. Lots of problems in the North Sea. Brazil, I mean, there were problems everywhere. Inventories are about are about 50 million below the seasonal average heading into the winter. There is no way prices can…
